Here’s another incredible United game, a seven goal home thriller between United and Real Madrid in 2003.
United needed a disciplined performance having been beaten 3-1 in the first leg. RVN is in the team and on fire. Veron is still there and Beckham is fresh from the ‘flying boot’ affair and ‘estranged’ from the manager.
Real are really tasty – Zidane, Figo, Roberto Carlos, Makele and the imperious Ronaldo.
It’s a classic match with an incredible Ronaldo hatrick. Not many players get three goals against United. Even fewer do it at Old Trafford! A standing ovation followed when the Brazilian left the field.
Fergie must have nightmares about his team’s defensive performance. The ball-watching of the midfield was shocking. Then again, the movement of Real Madrid is the very best.

Future Reds boss Ron Atkinson gave United directors a 90 minute demonstration of his footballing ethos by displaying the last great WBA side in all its glory on a wintry December day.
The Midlanders featured the future United players Bryan Robson and Laurie Cunningham, plus John Wile, Len Cantello and the great Cyrille Regis.
United were no more than useful in those days under Dave Sexton’s watch but with with some decent performers in their ranks - Coppell, Macari, Pearson, Buchan, McQuuen - were always capable of a great performance.
United put on a show against the Baggies but were simply outgunned by one of the best teams to visit Old Trafford that decade. It was like that moment when Real Madrid’s Ronaldo was applauded off the field by United fans after scoring a hatrick against Fergie’s side in the Champions League match- West Brom were that good!
