Gossip: Another Day, Another Rumour
Is the news day really this slow?
The august Sun newspaper reports that United are tracking veteran French defender Willy Sagnol.
“Bayern Munich star Willy Sagnol is a £4.5million target for United,” the newspaper thunders. “United boss Alex Ferguson is keeping a close eye on the France right-back and could move in the January transfer window.”
Is your heart beating faster yet at the thought of United slotting in the final piece of the jigsaw next January? Well, read on…
“Fergie rates the Frenchman highly and United need cover in that position. Sagnol, 30, is returning to fitness after four months out with a leg injury. Crucially, he could be available for Champions League duty, as he has not played in Europe with Bayern so far this season.”
The tireless Sun hack wants fans to believe that United are ready to go back to Bavaria and return with an ageing full back, who has been out for four months with leg injuries…to..er, replace another ageing fullback who has been out for months with leg injuries.
And if the hack had bothered to consult the cuttings from last week, Sir Alex’s words would have spiked the story immediately and had the scribbler running fast for a place to hide.
“We won’t be strengthening in January, I can assure you of that,” Ferguson said on 21 October.
But who cares what the United manager says. I am being naieve. Fergie’s act is just that…It’s all a smokescreen. Sagnol’s coming. United are thrashing out terms with Ronaldhino’s agent so that he can join for the title run-in. And George Weah’s cousin has telephoned Ferguson with a personal recommendation from Graeme Souness, hoping to swing a deal.
Strewth! Any more of these tales and fans will start to disbelieve Her Majesty’s press corps!
