Evra: No Complacency

Patrice Evra will not allow complacency to creep into his game despite his position as Manchester United’s first-choice left-back.

With Gabriel Heinze having left for Real Madrid, Mikael Silvestre out for the season with cruciate damage and John O’Shea nursing a knee injury, Evra looks a certain starter for the foreseeable future.

But the Frenchman is determined to continue to show the improvement he demonstrated last season which earned him a place in Ferguson’s plans in the first place.

He said: “Last year I did well. But football is like a pyramid. You need to stay at the top all the time.

“This season is very important for me because I want to confirm what I did last year. It is not a case of playing like Cristiano (Ronaldo), I just need to do my job properly.”

Evra has expressed his sympathy for compatriot Silvestre and visited his team-mate in hospital within 24 hours of the injury occurring.

“Losing Mikael is bad news for United,” he said.

“He is a friend as well as a team-mate and it was important for me to see him after he suffered the problem.”
