SAF: The Title Is A Struggle Now
Sun: ALEX FERGUSON has admitted Manchester United face an uphill task to retain the title.
After this derby day defeat at Eastlands, United have just two points from three games.
Boss Fergie said: “10 years ago we could have handled that because we were always good in the second half of the season — now we are going to have to be. We’ve got ourselves an uphill fight now.
“The most important thing is that we get a win under our belts. So the game at home against Tottenham next Sunday is very important to us now.”
This is United’s worst start since the 1992-93 season when they took only one point from their first three games. But they can take comfort from the fact they recovered to win the league that season.
United had by far the weight of possession and the most shots yesterday, but they still went down to a Geovanni first-half strike.
New Argentinian signing Carlos Tevez was most guilty in front of goal, missing a sitter of a header in the last minute.
Ferguson said: “We have been very wasteful in front of goal, that’s the nuts and bolts of it.
“It is not a case of saying City were lucky because we had so many opportunities ourselves. It is our own fault because of our shortcomings in the last third.”
