Red Universe: Day 2 of The Premiership
Pride of place in the red universe, on day two of the Premiership, goes to Peter Schmeichel’s lad Kasper, whose safe goalkeeping helped City to a win over Derby.
Young Schmikes is a ringer for his dad and has now kept two clean sheets for City, who managed to score at home for the first time since the fall of the Roman Empire. Michael Johnson’s well-taken goal was enough to break Derby’s hearts and to take City to the top of the league.
Fans might wonder why a Red legend’s son is plying his trade in Blue? The Guardian offered a clue. “Schmeichel looks too small to be a top-class goalkeeper but his lack of nerves, making only his second start, will have delighted his father, Peter, who was in the crowd,” it revealed today.
City will now prepare for the weekend’s derby with the luxury of a four point advantage over United and will want to inflict yet more pain on Sir Alex, who has lost Rooney to inury and Ronaldo to suspension, following his red card in the 1-1 draw at Portsmouth.
United nemesis Didier Drogba resumed his cup final form, scoring in the 2-1 victory over Reading. The only blessing for United is the form of Petr Cech, guilty of an uncharacterictic howler that helped Reading to an easy first goal on the ground of all his nightmares.
Roy Keane looks to have departed Old Trafford with the gift of the last minute escape. In the clash of the Red old boys, Birmingham’s Steve Bruce appeared to have gained the upper hand until a highly dubious Stern John goal earned Sunderland a late, late 2 -2 reprieve.
Is Spurs’ Mido a better buy than Alan Smith? Middlesbrough boss Gareth Big Nose must hope so. He chased Smudger like he was virgin tottie during the summer, only to find his offers repeatedly turned down by the United forward who preferred Newcastle.
It looks like Smith’s judgement was spot on. Under the watchful gaze of their new Egyptian forward, Boro lost again, going down 1-0 at Wigan. Isn’t that impossible when Titus Bramble lines up for Athletic?
Bolton suffered a second straight defeat too, suffering a 2-1 reverse at resurgent Fulham. Taxi for Anelka?
