Silvestre’s Newcastle Snub And The Price Of Friendship …

What is the future for Mikael Silvestre now that freindship with Ousmane Dabo has forced him to reject Newcastle’s advances?

The United defender turned down a move to the north east because he didn’t want to be a team mate of new signing Joey Barton. He faces trial next October for an alleged assault on Dabo whilst both played at Manchester City.

“It was a good contract and a fine opportunity, but money is not the only thing in life,” Silvestre revealed. “I could not sign for Newcastle out of respect for Ousmane Dabo.”

Silvestre’s decision may have strengthened a friendship with Dabo which began more than a decade ago at the French club Rennes but as the defender admits, professional calculations were far from his thoughts. He must know that players do not need to be bosom pals to be part of the same team. Just ask Teddy Sheringham and Andrew Cole, who enjoyed starring roles in the rip roaring United side of their era, without allowing a word to pass between them after the escalation of a trivial dispute.

Silvestre may finally come to rue his decision if he remains a fringe member of United’s squad. Silvestre has started for United in the Community Shield and in the Premiership opener but few observers tip the Frenchman for a long stay at left back. At 30 and with career frustration rising, Silvestre may not find another club willing to match the terms offered by Newcastle. Sam Allardyce has already persuaded Alan Smith to the north east and could finally emerge as the manager who brings success to the Toon fans.

Moreover, Silvestre’s decision might also affect United’s budgeting and squad strategy. Speculation is rife in Newcastle that Sam Allardyce may have been ready to pay as much  as £6 million for Silvestre. Sir Alex may not tempt another club to make such an incredible offer for a defender who whilst versatile, still leaves a lot to be desired at the highest level.
