Have Everton Lost Out On Smudger? …
Has Blackburn boss Mark Hughes crushed Everton’s hopes of signing United striker Alan Smith?
Press reports earlier this month claimed manager David Moyes wanted to bring the 26 year old England hitman to Goodison Park.
However, cash-strapped Everton believed they could offload the disappointing James Beattie to Blackburn for £4 million, before moving for Smith, who is now surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
Now ex-United favourite Mark Hughes appears to have dashed Everton’s hopes by announcing that Bayern Munich striker Roque Santa Cruz, 25, will arrive at Ewood Park on a four year deal.
“We have some very good strikers at this club but what we haven’t got is a real aerial threat. That’s where Santa Cruz can help,” the Blackburn manager told the Sun newspaper. “To get someone of his quality through the door compared to other deals that have been done would be exceptional.”
Middlesbrough now lead the chase for Smith after agreeing a £6 million transfer fee with United and hope to discuss the deal with the player next week.
