Carrick: Bring On Hargreaves …

BBC: Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says he would be delighted if England colleague Owen Hargreaves joined him at Old Trafford.

Hargreaves, 26, seems certain to join United from Bayern Munich.

Carrick, 25, who would compete with Hargreaves for a midfield place, said: “World-class players will strengthen you and Owen is a top player.

“We are at the world’s biggest club and we want the best players. We need a big squad to fight on all fronts.”

Bayern confirmed on Sunday that they had agreed to sell Hargreaves, who has been a long-time target of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Carrick played 50 games for United in his first season after an £18.6m move from Spurs.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney have played more matches for the club and Carrick looked jaded at times during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

Despite the loss, Carrick feels United proved their superiority by winning the Premiership title ahead of the Stamford Bridge outfit.

“The league table doesn’t lie,” he added. “We won the league. We are the champions. We have proved we are the best team over a period of time.

“I felt we were the better team again in the final. But cup games are one-offs and we have lost to a goal near the end.

“No-one remembers the runners-up on occasions like these but we can go into next season knowing how good we are and hopefully we will achieve what we achieved this year.”
