Gossip: United Watch Hutton
Rangers defender Alan Hutton has become the latest defender to be linked with a move to United.
The News of the World claims the £8 million rated fullback has been watched by Sir Alex who is seeking an eventual successor to the oft-injured Gary Neville.
“The United boss hopes Neville can continue for another few years but the England veteran has not featured since an ankle injury in March,” the newspaper states today. “Ferguson knows he has to find a long-term replacement. Wes Brown has been in good form but Ferguson is believed to still have some reservations.
“Hutton — an attacking full-back who measures over 6ft — is establishing himself as one of the position’s top prospects.
“While United’s need is not desperate, Ferguson knows he might have to act quickly with both Liverpool and Arsenal keeping tabs.”
Last month, United were linked with Bayern Munich’s French defender Willy Sagnol.
Gossip rating: Why should United be looking at new defenders when the highly-rated Danny Simpson is on the books? Is the Hutton rumour similar to the tales that circulated a few years ago which proposed United as firm suitors for the emerging Leighton Baines, then of Wigan, now of Everton?
